Melbourn wins award for anticipating customer needs

Growth of its portfolio of analytical and formulation services and doubling of its facilities to become the biggest lab of its kind in Europe has won Melbourn Scientific a glittering prize in the 2010 annual Cambridge News Business Excellence Awards.
Against stiff competition from companies across a range of business sectors, Melbourn Scientific scooped the prestigious Barclays Commercial Bank Award. The award acknowledges the performance of the company that has best demonstrated its ability to adapt and grow to the changing economic climate.
Mark Hammond, Chief Executive Officer, comments:
“We are delighted to win the Barclays Award. I would like to thank our staff for their enthusiasm and dedication. They have made a tremendous effort over the last year and have managed to maintain business as usual despite the ambitious building programme.”
Melbourn Scientific has responded to changes in the pharmaceutical and biotech industry by extending its service offering. By specialising in the development stage and integrating manufacture with formulation and analysis the company has created a niche for itself. The recent expansion of its laboratory includes special project rooms to support this activity.
Currently, there is a shortage of skilled analysts and formulators in the industry so the company has invested time and resources in training its own people and linked this with the quality system. As a result Melbourn Scientific now has one of the strongest teams in the industry.
The company has also prioritised export and has adjusted its way of working to support an international client base, working to the highest quality standards and investing in specialist areas and equipment. Melbourn now has clients in over a dozen countries contributing 37 per cent of its turnover.
Mark Hammond was one of 100 business leaders congratulated by PM Gordon Brown last year on the company’s export achievements.
